First, a note: I ask that people please reblog this to spread this since the tags are kinda unusable right now, especially when a post has external links within it.
Dreamwidth has been my main active posting platform for a year and a half now, and I’ve noticed a lot of bloggers talking about jumping ship over to DW with tumblr’s uhhhhhh current state of affairs.
But DW is kinda bland and boring if you’re too young to have been of the LiveJournal generation, and therefore don’t know where to look or start in order to build your friends list and find communities, so I’m going to do some of the legwork for you.
the_great_tumblr_purge: I made a dw community specifically for people jumping ship from tumblr to reconnect with each other.
addme: a friending community where you pimp yourself out and find other people with similar interests that you might want to see on your reading page.
addme_fandom: similar to above, only with a stronger emphasis on finding people based on your fandoms.
fandomcalendar: a community where you can find fandom events, such as big bangs, exchanges, challenges, bingos, etc. and other fandom communities that might suit your interests.
deleted a bunch of chronic pain and chronic illness posts from blogs they’ve left (like mine)
This isn’t just about ‘oh no you can’t look at people fucking anymore’ (even though lots of sex workers are losing their means of supporting themselves). This goes a lot further, with a lot more chilling effects.
The sexualizing of things like ‘top surgery’ or declaring all ‘trans’ tagged things to be … sexual… is really, REALLY fucked up. Never mind the fact that ‘chronic pain’ had NOTHING to do with sexiness, and we’ve been given no explanation as to why disabled people were considered acceptable collateral damage.
ALSO I had a post flagged earlier today for a cartoon picture of Mario in a bathing suit. Mario, from Super Mario Brothers.
Someone else reported a picture of a cartoon scorpion with a hard hat on being flagged as pornography. Tagging things as ‘queer’ or ‘gay’ gets them flagged NSFW. (Hey, guess what I’d been tagging my t-shirts, because they’re pride stuff? Oh right. Queer. Gay. Pride.)
This is a fucking problem, let’s not blow it off.
I know some people are too young (or simply weren’t involved in fandom back then) to remember what went down with livejournal and a couple of other sites “back in the day”, but it all started out as “it’s okay, we’re just removing the nasty porn”, and then “okay well, just make sure you put your porn behind a cut, no, wait jk you need to host it externally, a link is fine, maybe” and pretty much devolved swiftly into “actually sweety, LGBT content is inherently NSFW by default because it might make the kiddies gay if we expose them to it, so y’all need to leave now byyyeeee”.
Like…that happened. And it took nearly a decade for the fandom spaces to recover and stabilize and to get to the point where LGBT content creators could host their content without being told “you’re not welcome here” and I’m just sitting here, watching as youtube demonetizes LGBT content creators, and Facebook flags up LGBT ads as “inappropriate” and now tumblr is going through the queer and gay tags and just mass blanketing it as inappropriate, while actual pornbots and nazis wind up in my recommended feed.
(As an interesting aside: isn’t it funny how all these sites attribute these things to an algorithm error? Itsn’t that funny.)
Like I am uncomfortable y’all. I am looking around at everything I’ve built and all the friends I’ve made and I know we’re all looking for the next safe space to jump to while hoping we don’t lose each other overnight like “the olden days” where you’d wake up and your fave blogger was just gone.
And usually it was because they’d drawn or written something as simple yet explicit as a kiss. It was just the wrong kind of kiss.
So yea, the sky is not falling, but the ice under our feet sure is making worrying sounds.
From someone who’s survived MySpace, livejournal, deviantart, and fanfiction.nets’ content purges and bad policy updates, here’s some advice on how to get through tumblr’s recent bullshit:
– don’t knee jerk delete. I know it’s tempting to peace out immediately but hang on and do the other steps first. Out right ghosting and erasing everything is how fandoms die.
– archive everything on your blog you want to keep
– tell your followers how they can archive and keep your work too. A lot of fic and art were only saved from ff.net and lj because other people saved it first. If you’re cool with other people saving your work for them to personally keep, let them know this. You can absolutely discourage reposting but I really do highly recommend you allow people to personally save fic and art they like and are worried will disappear forever. Digital Dark Ages are a real thing.
– tell people where you’re jumping ship to. Give links. Keep that info up, even if you’ve left the site.
– go through who you follow and find out where else you can follow them. Save their work if they’ll allow it. It’s tedious as hell but if you want to keep up with people on here clicking on their page to check in is the best way to do it.
– support places like ao3. This is exactly why ao3 asks for donations a few times a year. They are a 100% anti-purging, judgement free, ad free non profit run by an elected board and protected by lawyers. Places like ao3 literally save fandom so please continue to support them and other similar archives. This is exactly why ao3 is so important.
Here’s what boggles the mind: The vast majority of Tumblr has been doing their due diligence for YEARS. 90% of NSFW bloggers tag their content, make sure they’ve toggled the NSFW filters for their blog and go to great lengths to make sure there are no minors following them. And a LARGE number of people use Tumblr to make a living using the NSFW channels provided, be that cam models, fan artists who take commissions, smut authors who take commissions, just general erotica writers, etc. And this has all been fine. They stay on their side of Tumblr, tag appropriate, take all the necessary steps to follow the guidelines laid out by Tumblr.
Then you have the problem areas.
And again, 98% of Tumblr users are doing the right thing. How many years have we been complaining about pedophiles on this website? We email staff, we take screenshots, we tag them in disgusting “MAP” posts, we have been trying for YEARS AND YEARS to get Tumblr to pay attention and give a shit about the rampant pedophile community on Tumblr dor fucking com. Same with the porn bots. We block them. We report them. We do everything we’re supposed to do.
We BEG Tumblr to do something about the pedophiles, the porn bots, the hate speech, the KKK blogs, the child porn, and they do NOTHING. They give us cursive and colored text and they do nothing about the problems that WE are all trying to manage.
And then, in the end, they just nix NSFW content all together? That’s their big solution? That’s how they solve the problem? They punish the artists, the authors, the sex workers, the every day sexuality bloggers who have been following the rules and reporting offensive content and weeding out and blocking minors, just to say “eh, fuck it, no one gets anything!” and we’re all just supposed to accept that? When Tumblr has consistently been the only social media platform to allow unfiltered NSFW content integration alongside an otherwise SFW site? Wasn’t that the whole draw of Tumblr? That you could post about your life, share music, share porn, look at art, support people’s commissions and CHOOSE what you wanted to see? If you wanted a K-Pop blog, you got one. If you wanted a porn blog, you got one, If you wanted a mix, you got it.
And the shittiest part is there is no alternative. There is no other website like Tumblr. A lot of us have been here a long time. I’ve been on Tumblr since 2010. I’ve made lifelong friends here. I’ve done commissions here. People make a living here. There is no jumping ship because there is no other ship to jump to and that’s real fucking shitty when Tumblr dot com has decided to scrub this site entirely clean, top to bottom, rather than ACTUALLY get off their asses and do something about the pedophiles and the spam bots.
And that is my two cents on this little surprise cease and desist letter we’ve been greeted with today. Guess we gotta get all of our NSFW discourse out of the way while we can, huh?
Just a heads up – people are reblogging untagged NSFW stuff, and I just came across one that was completely shocking.
Not cool.
I’m all for protesting the stupidity of Tumblr, and yes, it’s stupid that Tumblr’s flag-bot hasn’t picked some of these up, but if you are actively sharing these tasteless garbage posts, then you are part of the problem and you should be ashamed.
